Our Alderwoman represents Walbrook Ward in the Court of Aldermen, within the City of London Corporation, and is honorary President of our Ward Club

Alderwoman

Jennette Newman

Jennette has 25 years experience in the legal and insurance law sector, focusing in the last 15 years at a leadership level on business innovation, operational change. She was elected as Alderwoman for Walbrook Ward in 2022.

Our Common Councillors

Our two Common Councillors represent the electorate - business and individuals - in Walbrook Ward

James Thomson CBE

James was elected as Common Councilman for Walbrook Ward in 2013 and was re-elected in 2017 and 2022. James is the Deputy for the Ward.  

Outside the City, James is Chief Executive of MJ Gleeson plc the listed house builder focused on building low cost affordable homes for first time buyers. He is also a non-executive  board member of the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and a non-executive board member of the Serious Fraud Office.

Alethea Silk

Alethea has worked in the City for a number of years, with the last 7 years based in Walbrook. Whilst currently working in property and security covering an estate both in the City and across the UK, she has also worked across a range of industries.

Chairman

HH Donald Cryan (Hon) LLD

Donald is a retired Circuit Judge. His work was primarily in the Family Courts, but he sat in the years before his retirement in the Mayor and City of London Court. He was Master of the Fruiterers Company 1999-2000 and Treasurer of the Inner Temple in 2016. Donald remains on the Court of the Fruiterers and is still a Governing Bencher of the Inner Temple. He is President of the Selden Society.

Vice-Chairman

John Garbutt, JP, FRSA, FRGS, FCSI

John was President of Walbrook Ward Club between 2009 and 2022 while he was Alderman for Walbrook Ward. He is currently Master of the Guild of Investment Managers, having been Master or equivalent at the Weavers and Joiners and Ceilers Livery companies, the Guild of Freemen, the Royal Society of St George (City Branch) and the City Livery Club. He was also appointed by the Monarch as High Sheriff of Greater London in 2020/2021 and will be again from April 2025.

Hon Treasurer

Nick Dumbreck

Nick retired in 2024 after a long career as a consulting actuary, working in Walbrook Ward from 2009 onwards. He was President of the Institute of Actuaries from 2006 to 2008 and Master of the Actuaries’ Livery Company from 2017 to 2018. He is a member of the Athenaeum Club and enjoys opera, watching cricket, art, travel, gardening and puzzles

Hon Archivist

Alvan Seth-Smith

Alvan was Chairman of Walbrook Ward Club in 2024-25 and Master of the Glovers Company 2017-18. He is retired, previously Deputy Chief Executive of the General Dental Council.  His main hobby is cricket, serving on the Committee of Middlesex County Cricket Club for over 30 years.

PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS

We welcome new members, whether you work or live in the Ward or are members of the Livery who would like to join in our activities.  We hold a Lunch and a Dinner each year, and the Chairman and Hon Secretary organise events, which are open to all members.
